The story of The Birth Center starts, as expected, with a birth; my birth.

My name is Erietta Kourkoulou-Latsi and I have nothing to do with midwifery (I don’t have a midwifery background). However, Katerina Georgakoula, co-founder and independent midwife, has supported hundreds of women before, during and after labour. The Birth Center was born from our shared dream: the creation of the first Freestanding Birth Center in Greece. Three years later, with the help of people who believed in this vision, we managed to make it happen.

Natural birth: a unique experience

In The Birth Center individualised care is offered, based on the midwifery centred model, and women have the opportunity to have a birth experience that responds to their needs and wishes, in a safe and familiar environment. Our wish is to create an environment in which women will be at the center and will feel empowered to welcome their children with love, respect and care.

The Birth Center is housed in a modern building, which meets the requirements and sets high operational standards. It has been designed in line with the creation of a warm and safe place that combines calmness, comfort and familiarity, contributing to a holistic birth experience.

Presentation of The Birth Center
On the 10th of November Katerina Georgakoula represented The Birth Center at the ICM Regional Conference “Midwives 360: Associations for a changing world” in Berlin, Germany. There, she presented the founding of The Birth Center, within the workshop “Scaling up Midwifery Units in Europe: tools to start an implementation project”, coordinated by Dr. Lucia Rocca Ihenacho. We hope that our story encouraged and inspired more midwives who fight for the protection of birthrights and promotion of natural birth.
